WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that Republicans won’t allow Democrats to temporarily replace California Sen. Dianne Feinstein on the Senate Judiciary Committee, arguing that they only want a stand-in to push through the most partisan judges.McConnell called the effort to place a substitute on the panel as Feinstein recovers from a case of shingles “an extremely unusual” request with no known precedent.“Let’s be clear,” said McConnell in remarks on the Senate floor. “Senate Republicans will not take part in sidelining a temporarily absent colleague off a committee just so Democrats can force through their very worst nominees.”Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has said that he is moving forward and hopes to put a resolution on the Senate floor this week to ask for unanimous consent to appoint a temporary substitute. But it is likely to be blocked, and it is unclear if Democrats would hold a roll call vote.Feinstein, 89, has been absent fro...Road to US Open begins, some LIV Golf players take a pass

The U.S. Open exempts anyone from the top 60 in the world ranking on May 22, the Monday after the PGA Championship. LONDON — Humza Yousaf reached for the reset button Tuesday. But, with a police probe engulfing the Scottish National Party he now leads, it looks like he’ll need a bigger button. In a key speech to the Scottish parliament, the devolved nation’s new first minister set out his platform for the next three years at the helm of the governing SNP. Yet all the attention was on both his absent predecessor Nicola Sturgeon — and another high-profile arrest in the party ranks. On Tuesday morning, just as Yousaf prepared to deliver his plan, the SNP’s treasurer Colin Beattie was taken into custody in connection with an ongoing police investigation into the SNP’s finances. It’s the latest twist in a near-two-year inquiry by Police Scotland, which began after complaints were made about the party’s use of a £600,000-plus fund raised by activists and intended to be ring-fenced for campaigning on its biggest prize: Scottish independence. And it came in the week Sturgeon — a key ...Police: Gunfire on Maine highway linked to 4 bodies in home

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft led a delegation that included rapper Meek Mill on a march in Poland on Tuesday to honor victims and survivors of the Holocaust. The 3-kilometer “March of the Living” is an annual commemoration that covers the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex, the largest Nazi concentration camp during World War II.The event is being attended by Kraft as part of his Foundation to Combat Antisemitism, which he started in 2019 to address hate against Jews. Kraft lit the first torch at the outset of the march, a Patriots team spokesman said.Kraft was one of several celebrities who helped advocate on behalf of Mill, who was released from prison in 2018 after initially being sentenced to two to four years in jail for probation violations in decade-old gun and drug convictions.Kraft has since joined Mill, rap mogul Jay Z and Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin in the Reform Alliance, a group that lobbies for changes to state probation and par...Latest news
