As Tropical Storm Hilary bears down on Southern California, a series of earthquakes have complicated the picture further — with the first, a magnitude 5.1 quake, hitting just southeast of Ojai around 2:45 p.m.More than a dozen aftershocks followed suit, ranging from 2.5 to 3.8 on the Richter scale. Both the Ventura County Sheriff and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass reported that there were no immediate reports of damage. Still, the quakes’ impacts rippled from Ventura to Los Angeles to Kern counties, according to U.S. Geological Survey tool that allows individuals to report their experiences. One Ventura-based individual reported that he felt over a minute’s worth of rolling; another in Sherman Oaks said they felt a big jostle followed by long, wobbly rolls.“The hurricane wasn’t enough. We just got hit with an earthquake too,” tweeted Markeia McCarty, a Los Angeles-based actress. “Remember us after we break off into ocean.”Dr. Lucy Jones, ...

Wildfire threat lurks year-round despite abundant rain

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 00:55:26 GMT

CASTLE PINES, Colo. (KDVR) -- Firefighter crews at South Metro Fire Rescue Station 39 are on standby and ready to go for a Red Flag Warning Sunday. “We have low humidity, high temperatures and gusty winds, which can make lands more vulnerable for fires," Eric Hurst, the PIO South Metro Fire Rescue said Sunday. Hot days ahead can increase fire danger with dry vegetation Hurst said Sunday's Red Flag Warning day was the first they've had in a while. He believed the last time they had one in their district was in the spring earlier this year.“We’ve had record-breaking rainfall and a lot of the area looks green, so it might be a surprise there is a Red Flag Warning today," Hurst said. "But the weather and the climate are two different things when it comes to wildfires." On days with high fire danger, Hurst said they respond to calls with more resources than normal. “On a normal day, if there is a small brush fire we send two engines, but on a day like today, we send six engines becaus...

Colorado cities with the most homes at risk in wildfires

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 00:55:26 GMT

(NEXSTAR) – The Maui fires are a terrifying reminder of the destruction that wildfires can cause. It's a threat many Western U.S. residents are unfortunately familiar with. A new report from CoreLogic analyzed how many homes and apartments in 14 Western states are at a high risk of fires. They looked at areas' slope, drought conditions, wildfire fuel, wind and other factors to determine places with the most at-risk residences. The West's largest state, California, unsurprisingly had the most number of homes facing wildfire risk. The Golden State also had the highest estimated cost for rebuilding after a devastating fire. Will a COVID mask protect you from wildfire smoke? While fires can occur anywhere, areas with lots of homes butted up against nature are at a higher risk. For example, in the Los Angeles metro area, residences "face an elevated risk due to their proximity to forested or undeveloped areas," the CoreLogic report said. "This geographic placement can pose challenges ...
