Millennial Money: Should I join a class-action lawsuit?

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:02:11 GMT

It might have happened to you a few times in past years: You received an email or mail notice inviting you to join a class-action lawsuit, or notifying you that you’ve been automatically included. But being part of such a lawsuit might be intimidating, especially if you need to opt in, and would mean surrendering the option to sue individually. In most cases, there’s little downside to joining these lawsuits, which combine many legal claims — often thousands — into one claim against a single defendant, reducing fees for each claimant and potentially earning a much larger payout. And there have been many opportunities to do so. Following a series of large opioid settlements, 2022 had the most billion-dollar class-action settlements in U.S. history apart from the tobacco settlements decades ago, according to a report from the national law firm Duane Morris. The stakes are high for class-action lawsuits at this level, as they set standards for corporate responsibility in areas such as da...

Aaron Franklin, acclaimed Austin pit master, breathes new life into historic east Austin venue

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:02:11 GMT

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The blighted, yet charming, abandoned building at 1200 East Sixth Street on the corner of Waller Street has undoubtedly captivated east Austinites for years. Built by a German immigrant in 1892, the structure got its start as a saloon but has hosted a variety of tenants since the late 19th century –  including European bakers, Anglo-American-born butchers, Mexican American tortilla makers and Lebanese and Mexican American bar owners – until it was left vacant in 1999, according to historical accounts. Though abandoned, vestiges of its robust history were evident in the large block letters written along the exterior of the building reading, “Uptown Sports” in faded red paint. One person who long wondered who might pick up the baton and breathe some fresh air into the historic vacant space is Aaron Franklin, acclaimed Austin pitmaster. He has been charmed by the building for years and even eyed it initially as an option for his now-famous restaurant...

Communing with honeybees has people buzzing in Boulder County

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:02:11 GMT

Reclining on a bench in a wooden hut mere inches above thousands of humming honeybees in four active hives might sound like a frightening experience to some. It seems to have the opposite effect on guests who spend time in the “bee huts” at the Capella Ranch in Lafayette. There is nothing to fear because, while the hum of the bees and the aroma of fresh honey can waft into the hut’s interior through slats in the bench, the bees are kept out by screen mesh. Most guests find their visits relaxing, and some report more profound effects. When Kari Tewalt had her first bee hut experience there this week, she was entranced by the sound of the bees, noticing it had a “meditative” effect on her. She also felt what she called a “magnetic field,” a head-to-toe sensation akin to goosebumps.“It’s a sensation almost like an energy flow,” said Tewalt, 48, a Broomfield resident who enjoyed her session so much she made reservations for a return vi...

Projecting the Broncos’ 2023 schedule under new head coach Sean Payton

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:02:11 GMT

The NFL schedule is set to be released at 6 p.m. Thursday — apparently Aaron Rodgers’ trade to the New York Jets and Lamar Jackson’s mega-extension in Baltimore didn’t throw a wrench in the proceedings — and so far we don’t know too much more about it than that.We know the Broncos won’t be playing internationally. We know it’s unlikely, though not impossible, that Denver ends up playing on the road Thanksgiving weekend, Christmas Day and New Year’s weekend like it did last year. We may learn a bit more about select games or if the Broncos end up playing in the NFL’s first Black Friday game on Wednesday.Outside of that, it’s a blank canvas. So what better to do than throw some paint and see what happens. Maybe a masterpiece. Here’s dueling scheduling predictions from Broncos beat writers Parker Gabriel and Ryan McFadden.
